Malu Banna Hotel and Watersports Centre is a family run business on the Bentota River in Sri Lanka. We cater for both individuals and groups up to 450 pax for MICE and large events. We are situated on the Bentota River near to the bridge and conveniently close to Aluthgama town centre, whilst enjoying a quite riverside location. You will enjoy stunning views of the activities on the Bentota River and a short walk to the famous Bentota Beach.

The 2 standard deluxe rooms on the side of building have river and garden views. They are well appointed and very comfortable, with the same style spacious bathrooms.
Superior deluxe rooms
Two superior deluxe rooms are on the upper penthouse level – having large balconies overlooking the famous Bentota River. These rooms have views overlooking the Bentota Peninsular and right to the world renown Bentota Beach. This is indeed the ideal location to watch the Ocean Sunset and enjoy some personal time relaxing with a sunset cocktail from room service whilst observing the world and river activities.

There are two deluxe rooms on the second floor, having river good views of the river activities and are wonderful for observing our spectacular Sri Lankan sunsets.
Standard deluxe side rooms
These rooms are on the bridge side of the building and have tree top views of surrounding gardens and buildings. You can sit on the balcony and enjoy watching the coming and going of people passing over the famous Bentota Bridge and river traffic passing under the bridge. These rooms also enjoy sunrise and views of the Bentota Udakotuwa Temple through the trees.

Read the Malu Banna story – how the journey started…
Our family has been fishing on the Bentota River and out at sea for as long as anyone remembers, our family still lives on the banks of the river as we have for many years. Also we still go fishing! This is our home and the sea is part of our life.
Malu Banna started with a beautiful riverbank location with gorgeous views (our family home) and we invested in two boats, one wakeboard and lots of enthusiasm! We had a good team and a friendly family dog and so the journey started – MALU BANNA was born.
Soon after, we invested in jet ski’s as that is what our customers wished for … as well as the river safari boats and fishing trips.
Later we were asked for wakeboarding lessons, so the Malu Banna wakeboard boat arrived. We now have a large fleet that is maintained by our crew and we update our jet ski fleet regularly in order to offer our guests the latest and greatest that technology has to offer.
Chatura, is the eldest brother and “captain” of our team, he was born a watersports enthusiast, always in or around the water. During his younger years he become an experienced fisherman and qualified as an Ocean Dive Master. An enthusiastic sportsman, he won various sports awards in Sri Lanka ranging from body building to national water-ski championships.
In his younger years, Chatura worked with his uncle “Thusala” at Sunshine Watersports Centre when not at school because he loved the water and all sports associated with the sea. This was his calling.
Chatura soon became a key member of his uncle’s watersports team, working with customers and also winning a host of competitions. His future was decided, now he needed his own command.
Realising that international tourism is the key to success, Chatura ventured overseas to Dubai in the Middle East to learn how five star hotels worked and how they delivered high quality watersports to guests from around the world.
Chatura completed working overseas as a diving instructor at a prestigious 5 star hotel and was keen to start his own business. Gaining a wealth of knowledge from working in the UAE, together with some hard earned investment funds, he returned to Sri Lanka in 2010.
So the vision which started as a school boy became a reality. Hard work and long hours building the infrastructure and developing a strong team has resulted in one of the biggest and greatest Watersports companies in Sri Lanka.
Malu Banna regularly delivers local incentives, international MICE and corporate events for upwards of 450 guests. This includes Watersports, river tours and fine dining in the Malu Banna restaurant.
These days tradition is important as is realising the vision for the future. The years of investment is rewarded by major tour companies bringing groups as part of their island tours to enjoy the beauty of the Bentota River and beach.

International visitors come after discovering Malu Banna on social media and hotel booking sites.
Since 2018 Malu Banna has had representation at the Arabian Travel Market ( #ATMDUBAI ) which has brought more guests from a larger international pool.
Recent Developments
The old fisherman’s family home has been totally rebuilt in to a four storey hotel with seafood restaurant and there are six up-market guest rooms on the upper floors.
The modern watersports centre on the ground floor has changing rooms, toilets and showers. The pontoons and bridge allow access onto the river. In the evenings, the pontoon is used for evening candlelit dinners on the river.
The team of hotel staff and Watersports crew receive regular training to give the best customer experiences in a safe environment. Safety is essential when conducting watersports.
The riverside facility has been extensively refurbished by the team to international safety standards.
The “Juice Bar” is newly opened to the public and is right on the riverside – serving fresh fruits and cocktails to delight all tastes.
We have some traditional boats with a fleet of modern boats – speed boats, leisure crafts and of course our trusted deep sea fishing boat (which is still the best deep sea fishing boat in the area).

Malu Banna has once again opened its own seafood restaurant on the banks of the beautiful Bentota river. Our menu features the best local catch and fresh seafood daily, as well as some delicious Sri Lankan & Indian style curries.
Come and dine inside our spacious restaurant or on our unique floating deck. We are open for lunch and dinner, offering the perfect place to enjoy fun filled water sports, boat trips and kayaking by day and then a romantic and tranquil atmosphere by night. We also offer daily fishing trips, after which our chef will prepare any fish you catch for you to enjoy with your friends and family.
